The Leben RS-28CX uses a zero-feedback CR-type RIAA equalization stage built around selected General Electric 12AT7 tubes manufactured to J.A.N. specifications. Unlike conventional NFB phono stages, the equalization network operates without negative feedback, requiring higher intrinsic gain and tighter tube selection but avoiding the very low high-frequency feedback impedance associated with NFB designs. High-grade passive components are used throughout the RIAA network, maintaining equalization accuracy within ±0.3dB.

The line stage is based on General Electric 6CG7 twin-triode tubes operating in an SRPP configuration, providing 25.2dB gain and up to 80V maximum output. This unusually high voltage capability allows the RS-28CX to drive power amplifiers with relatively low input sensitivity while maintaining low residual noise of 0.03mV. A five-position attenuation system is also provided for use with high-sensitivity power amplifiers, reducing residual system noise at the loudspeakers.

The power supply is housed in a completely separate chassis to isolate the sensitive phono and line circuitry from transformer-generated magnetic fields, vibration and power-supply interference. The RS-28CX provides both variable and fixed 80V outputs, allowing simultaneous connection to a power amplifier and additional equipment such as an active subwoofer. Selected capacitors, resistors and other critical components are employed throughout the signal path, while a delayed muting circuit protects the system during tube stabilization after power-on.
