Technology

Motor Concept & Speed Stability
The Vertere RG-1 Reference Motor Drive is designed around a synchronous motor architecture. Unlike DC motors, synchronous motors lock directly to the frequency of their drive signal, allowing them to run at one absolutely constant rotational speed. When correctly implemented, this approach delivers superior speed accuracy and long-term stability, forming the foundation for true reference-level analogue playback.

Developed over more than two years, the RG-1 Motor Drive was conceived specifically to match the performance envelope of the RG-1 Reference Record Player and Reference Tonearm, enabling the system to realise its full musical and mechanical potential.

Signal Generation & Frequency Control
A key design objective was the ability to apply fine, repeatable speed correction to compensate for small speed deviations that may occur during the cutting process or already exist on the master tape. To achieve this, the RG-1 Motor Drive employs a microprocessor-based control system that generates the exact frequencies required for each defined speed step.

Following the microprocessor, a high-quality internal digital-to-analogue converter converts these frequencies into precise analogue sine and cosine waveforms, which are essential for accurate synchronous motor operation. These waveforms are subsequently amplified to the required drive levels using dedicated 20-watt audio amplifiers, ensuring stable and consistent motor control.

Power Architecture & Noise Control
The entire circuit topology is engineered to guarantee absolute speed stability while eliminating unwanted noise and distortion. Power delivery is handled by three dedicated toroidal transformers supplying the output amplifiers and the various sections of the internal circuitry. In addition, three fully regulated and decoupled power supply rails independently feed the microprocessor, the DAC, and all operating circuits.

To preserve signal integrity, the complete circuit is fully isolated within a solid copper shielding can, preventing external interference and internal cross-contamination between circuit stages.

Programmability & Future-Proof Design
The RG-1 Motor Drive is fully programmable, allowing any necessary adjustments to be implemented as requirements evolve, making the design effectively future-proof. The microprocessor can be programmed via an onboard RJ11 socket, ensuring long-term adaptability without compromising performance.

User Control, Adjustment & Construction
Speed adjustment is carried out via a front-panel rotary control, providing seven fixed speed offsets of ±0.25%, 0.50%, 0.75%, 1.00%, 1.50%, 2.00%, and 3.00% relative to the nominal 33 and 45 rpm speeds. Separate switches allow selection between 33/45 rpm operation and Sleep/Operation modes.

The main motherboard is mounted on a rigid aluminium chassis and enclosed within a solid, precision-machined aluminium alloy housing. Final fine-tuning of residual motor noise is accessible from the underside of the unit, allowing precise optimisation during installation.
