For many years, the Larsen 8 speakers were the pinnacle of ortho-acoustic design and once experienced by music lovers, audio enthusiasts and audiophiles around the world, justifiably developed a reputation as one of the most engaging and musically satisfying speakers available at any price.

After the world reacted so positively to the 8’s, Larsen’s engineering team continued to do research in the application of Stig Carlsson´s ortho acoustic principles to loudspeaker design, believing that a culture of continual improvement will one day result in an even more ground-breaking design. That day has arrived with the introduction of the new flagship in the range, the Larsen 9.

Improvements were made in many aspects including materials, drive units and cabinet geometry. The unique positioning and angle of the drivers, flanked by absorbers, creates a rich and deep three-dimensional sound stage, with far more detail and better ambience than the existing Larsen models. The stainless steel plate surrounding the tweeter is the same design as the Larsen 8. The two bass drivers working together under 300 Hz, create a deep, fast and precise bass extension with very low distortion all the way down to 22Hz! When was the last time you experienced bass as low as 22Hz without the presence of a rather powerful subwoofer? Coupled with a fast, clean, low-distortion mid-range and an ultra-transparent high frequencies, the Larsen 9 achieves an outstanding sonic dispersion, realism and musical fluidity.

Taking the critically acclaimed and ingenious designs from the Larsen 8 to its fullest potential, the Larsen 9 features curved wood sides and frame, wooden slots for ports, and top-of-the-line Illuminator drivers from Scan-Speak and highest quality Danish crossover components from Jensen. The result is full range speaker with lower distortion, higher resolution and improved dynamics and a huge visceral soundstage. The stylish Larsen 9, like all Larsen speakers, is designed to be placed against the wall and work with the room, not against it, with a very wide listening sweet spot and high WAF.

The Larsen 9 ticks all the boxes and is now regarded as one of the ultimate ‘real world’ speakers.

Soundstage! Australia, Barry Jones, 2021
If I had to choose one word to describe the Larsen 9s, it would be “Beguiling”, this word having sprung to mind frequently throughout my listening sessions….The Larsen 9 should be a serious contender for any enthusiast looking for the real thing. I just can’t imagine anyone not being impressed with these speakers. I liked them so much I wrestled with the idea of buying them continuously throughout the five-week review period.

The Absolute Sound, Robert Greene, 2020
This is a speaker that should be heard by every student of the audio arts……The Larsens offer a unique sound that to my ears is unusually true to actual music, and they are unusual, too, in their ease of effective placement in the room. They offer their unique sound with a truly minimal disturbance of domestic life. Whether their unique sound is for you is something you need to experience for yourself. You will have not heard anything else much like the sound—except of course in live music.

The principles of Ortho-Acoustics

Reflected sound from boundary surfaces is a part of the recording and listening process. They cannot and should not be avoided, because this reflected sound adds timbre and fullness to the instruments and voices of the musicians.
Conventional speakers are designed for, and tested in, an anechoic chamber. Meaning an echo-free room covered in absorbent material, a room without sound reflections. Which is why conventional speakers sound dull, lacking richness and color, in a “normal” room, thus creating a huge discrepancy between stated and real performance.
Larsen speakers are designed and constructed to thrive and perform phenomenally in a “normal” room by using the surface sound reflections in the design process, enriching the listening experience, instead of degrading it.
Larsen speakers are designed to stand flush against the wall, using the wall to create a deep and full bass from a smaller cabinet. This placement, combined with the unique positioning and angle of the drivers, flanked by absorption material, virtually eliminates the wall behind the speakers and eliminates early sound reflections from interfering with the initial direct sound from the speaker.
Stig Carlsson was the inventor of the unique acoustic design principle, which is used in the Larsen speakers. A patented design developed by Mr. Carlsson when he created speakers for Sonab in the sixties, resulting in the Sonab OA-4, 5 and 6. In the seventies he created the legendary Sonab OA-12, 14, 116 and 2212. Roy Allison and Peter Snell worked on similar ideas, making speakers incorporating with the room. In 1980, Mr. Carlsson created Carlsson OA-50, 51 and 52 that were produced until 2006.

John Larsen worked with Stig Carlsson for sixteen years until his death in 1997. His own brand, Larsen, applies the principles invented by Mr. Carlsson and has improved upon these innovative design principles.
Larsen is a genuine Swedish product, made by Larsen HiFi in Skillingaryd, Sweden, with help from local suppliers. The loudspeaker designer Anders Eriksson has designed and improved the electro acoustic part and John Larsen created the external design.
